Matt O’Donnell is a contemporary American artist and sculptor based in Western Wyoming.

His work begins with a form deeply rooted in Western history and symbolism. Through intricate pattern, color, texture, and layered surface treatment, he transforms the skull into something both recognizable and unexpected.
The resulting works explore the relationship between natural form and contemporary abstraction. Each skull retains the character of the original object while becoming an individual composition through Matt’s process of layering color, pattern, and surface.
Every work is created individually by hand, allowing the natural variations of each skull to become part of the finished piece. No two works are alike.
Living in Western Wyoming, Matt draws continual inspiration from the landscape around him—the scale of the mountains, the texture of the sagebrush, weathered materials, wildlife, and the changing colors of the high desert.
His work brings together these influences with a contemporary approach to color, pattern, and sculptural form.
Matt works individually on each skull, allowing the process to evolve with the natural form of the piece. What begins as a recognizable Western object develops through layers of experimentation, pattern, color, and texture.
The process is intentionally hands-on and individual. As a result, each finished sculpture is a unique work.
